Letter to Smith Tuttle, 1841, October 9.

Facsimile of a letter to Smith Tuttle from Joseph Smith, written from Nauvoo, Illinois. Smith writes that he has sent his brother Hyrum Smith and Dr. Isaac Gallard to fulfill his contract with Horace Hotchkiss, and is hoping to pay off the interest on their debt. He continues that Hotchkiss was displeased with the proceedings and that Smith was "exceedingly mortified...to think that he should distrust me." He concludes that he should not be blamed because he did not know what "I now know," in part because of his illnesses and persecutions by the "Governor of this state." He also laments the fact that the growth of their community has been stunted by "sickness & death," and continues on about his reaction to persecutions the Saints were facing. The letter may not be in the handwriting of Joseph Smith.
